Frustration mounts over damaged Savar road

Despite complaining to authorities, no steps have been taken so far, locals claim

Update : 28 May 2023, 11:18 PM

Locals have been suffering for a long time as a road in the Bhagalpur area of Savar Municipality has become impassable due to road damage from heavy truck movement and other factors.

The half-kilometre road from Bhagalpur Ceramic Bazar to Balughat in Ward No 6 is situated in one of the busiest sections of the municipality and witnesses a constant stream of sand-carrying trucks throughout the day. As a result, the road remains mired in mud for the better part of the year and even a slight drizzle exacerbates the situation.

Residents have complained that these trucks are mostly managed by the municipality and the mud makes the road a hazardous place for accidents. Despite complaining to authorities regarding the issue, no steps have been taken so far, locals said.

A ninth-grader who lives in the area told Dhaka Tribune that they cannot use the road to go to school. “When we try to walk on the road, we are splattered with mud from the speeding trucks.”

Rokia Akhtar, a resident of the Bhagalpur area, said: "During rainfall, we cannot even leave our homes. It is impossible for us to rent out these houses as well. The rooms remain vacant every month due to the bad condition of the road.

“When we informed the mayor and commissioner about the road, they said there was no funding available. We have even staged a human chain to demand the repair of this road,” she added.

Alhaj Abdus Chattar, commissioner of ward no 6 of Savar Municipality, told the Dhaka Tribune: “I have proposed a meeting regarding the condition of the road. It will be fixed soon."

Savar Municipality Mayor Abdul Gani said: “I know about the road too. It is in bad condition. It will take Tk4 crore to fix the road.”

He said the authorities will start the work once the funds are allocated.
