Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that democracy has won in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls, and it was not crucial whether Awami League won or not.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fulfilled her promise of fair elections, said the Awami League leader.
Quader made these remarks at a protest rally organized by Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League at the Awami League central office on Friday.
The rally was held demanding the punishment of Rajshahi BNP leader Abu Sayeed Chand, who was arrested for threatening to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
At the rally, Quader, also road, transport and bridges minister thanked the Election Commission for organizing a fair and free election and said: “The ruling party did not want to force its candidate to win.”
He pointed out that one thing has become clear due to the GCC polls, and that is BNP leaders lied about the unfair polling system of Bangladesh.
“BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul have been lying for so long that free, fair and impartial elections are not possible under this government. That has been proved false. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fulfilled her promise,” the minister added.
Dhaka Metropolitan South Awami League President Abu Ahmed Mannafi presided over the rally and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni, and Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam among others were also present.
