Former Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor and GCC's newly elected mayor Zayeda Khatun's son Jahangir Alam said Gazipur residents have won, and criminals have been exposed.
"Gazipur's voters have the freedom to vote for the candidate of their choice, exercising their democratic rights. Throughout challenging periods, my unwavering supporters and dedicated activists have stood by my side and offered their loyalty. After Allah, the residents were on both my and my mother, Zayeda Khatun's side,” he said.
He made the remarks while talking to an enthusiastic crowd and supporters in front of his residence in Gazipur on Friday afternoon.
"With the collaborative efforts of all, I pledge to govern this city with the help of my mother. Many would try to harm you, but be careful so no one can hurt you,” he added.
Jahangir noted: "My mother is your mother. My house is open to all of you. You can come anytime, in case of any needs. This city belongs to the residents. Our aspiration is to foster unity and harmony, leaving no room for conflict.”
Zayeda Khatun's residence has been flooded with flowers and garlands since Friday morning by activists, supporters, and people from all walks of life.
After a hard-fought battle with Awami League-nominated Azmat Ullah Khan, Zayeda Khatun, an independent candidate and mother of former mayor Jahangir Alam, has triumphed in the mayoral race of the Gazipur City Corporation in a competitive and peaceful election.
Zayeda Khatun bagged 238,934 while Azmat Ullah got 222,737 in Thursday's close-fought election, Returning Officer Faridul Islam announced at 1:30am on Friday.
