Independent candidate Zayeda Khatun, the mother of expelled mayor Jahangir Alam, has taken the lead in the Gazipur City Corporation election, securing 227,552 votes at 450 centres.
Her closest competitor, Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan from the Awami League (boat symbol), had 210,989 votes at the time of writing.
The mother of suspended mayor Jahangir Alam is leading Azmat Ullah Khan by 16,563 votes.
Returning Officer Faridul Islam made the announcement at around 12:30am on Friday.
There were 480 centres in total and the counting was still underway.
Voting started at 8am at the 480 centres in 59 wards. The voting concluded peacefully and smoothly at 4pm without any conflicts.
The other mayoral candidates are MM Niazuddin from the Jatiya Party (Plough symbol), Gazi Ataur Rahman from the Islami Andolon Bangladesh (Hand fan symbol), Raju Ahmed from the Zaker Party (Rose symbol) and Atiqul Islam from the Gana Front (Fish symbol).
Besides Zayeda, the independent candidates for the mayoral post are Harun-or-Rashid (Horse symbol) and Sarkar Shah Nur Islam (Elephant symbol).
