Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Thursday said the police will operate under the directives of the Election Commission during the national elections.
The police will do whatever is necessary to control law and order during the polls, said Abdullah Al-Mamun while speaking to journalists following a meeting with the commission on the upcoming city corporation elections.
The Election Commission held a meeting with law enforcement officers and high-ranking government officials ahead of the upcoming city corporation elections in Gazipur, Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi and Sylhet, at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
Several senior secretaries from the Public Security Division, secretaries from related ministries, the IGP, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and representatives from various government agencies attended this meeting.
The IGP said: "The topic of national parliamentary elections came up during the meeting; we will perform our duties following the instructions given by the Election Commission."
He further added that the meeting discussed in detail the forthcoming city corporation elections.
“The Election Commission has directed us to perform our duties, aiming for free, fair, and impartial elections. They have taken information from all agencies and hope for our cooperation. We have reassured them of our cooperation and commitment to performing our duties following their directives,” he added.
The Gazipur City Corporation polls will be held on May 25, while in Khulna and Barisal on June 12, and in Rajshahi and Sylhet on June 21.
