The very severe cyclonic storm Mocha may lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chittagong, Sylhet and Barisal divisions, raising concerns about potential landslides in the hilly regions of these areas, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
In a special weather bulletin on Saturday, Bangladesh Meteorological Department stated that under the effect of the very severe cyclone, there may be heavy (44 to 88 millimetres) to very heavy (up to 289 millimetres) rainfall in the three divisions.
The effects of heavy rainfall could cause landslides in certain hilly regions of Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, and Chittagong.
From Saturday evening, the front part of Mocha could start affecting Cox's Bazar and the surrounding coastal areas. Due to Mocha's impact, the sky over most parts of the country including Dhaka remain cloudy.
Some parts of the areas across Bangladesh are also experiencing rain.
The very severe cyclonic storm Mocha — over east central Bay and adjoining area — is likely to intensify further, move in a north-northwesterly direction and cross Cox's Bazar-Myanmar's north coast by 6pm on Sunday.
