Jahangir Alam says he will now take the matter to the High Court

Update : 04 May 2023, 07:09 PM

Suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam has lost an appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers by the returning officer for the upcoming polls to the GCC.

Jahangir Alam's appeal was heard at the Dhaka divisional commissioner's office on Thursday, where his appeal against the cancellation of his candidacy was rejected.

As a result, the order of the returning officer to cancel Jahangir's candidacy remains in effect, as confirmed by sources at the divisional commissioner's office.

Meanwhile, Jahangir announced that he will go to the High Court against this decision.

Previously, on April 30, Returning Officer Faridul Islam scrutinized the nomination papers and rejected Jahangir Alam's nomination for the mayoral post in the Gazipur City Corporation polls.

However, his mother Zayeda Khatun's nomination was declared valid.

At the time, Jahangir Alam told reporters at the returning officer's office that he had repaid the bank loan for which his nomination was cancelled.

Bank officials were also present at the time and they confirmed the loan repayment.

In the GCC election, Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan, chairman of the Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League, received the party's nomination for the mayoral post.

Jahangir had submitted his nomination papers to run as an independent candidate outside the party's decision.
