Shujan: No satisfaction in winning through stealing votes

Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) Executive Member Prof Robayet Ferdous said that one can be elected by stealing votes, but emotional satisfaction does not come from that.

“Those candidates hide their faces when they see people,” he said, calling upon the ruling party to hold a fair vote.

He was speaking at a dialogue held at Gazipur Press Club on Wednesday.

The citizens present in the event expressed concern of general voters and civil society as the Gazipur City Corporation has not fulfilled the basic needs of the citizens even in the last 10 years.

Organized by citizens for good governance, the mayoral candidates of the Gazipur City Corporation elections heard about the various problems and crises of the citizens in the civic conference.

Later, the candidates spoke about promises and hopes for the citizens to solve the various problems of Gazipur City.

Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan said that he wanted to involve the people in the city corporation and bring it under accountability. 

“City Corporation is running for 10 years without service roll. An organogram and a service roll will be prepared first within six months if I am selected,” he added.

Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Gazi Ataur Rahman expressed doubts about free and fair elections before making promises. He said: “People don't want to see rigged elections like the previous city elections. Fair elections first, then development.”

He requested the cooperation of Shujan and the Election Commission for fair voting.

Gano Front candidate Atiqul Islam said: “I have announced my candidacy for mayor since last five years. After the announcement, I found more than thousands of problems in 57 wards of the city.”

Abdullah Al Mamun Mandal, an independent mayoral candidate, said: “I think that even if the construction of residential buildings for workers has been started from the budget of thousand crore taka in our city corporation, we can do a process to make arrangements for the disabled and backward workers to live as a labour colony.” 

“Bangladesh's largest export earnings come from Gazipur. The prosperous economy of Gazipur is also due to the money of the workers here. There will be a special request to the government to give a certain amount of the income of the state from here to the Gazipur City Corporation for the development of the labour-dominated areas,” he added.
