Bangabazar fire-affected businessmen have set up shop on the footpath under the flyover with the clothes they managed to save from the devastating fire.

Around 800 traders displayed their stocks since this morning. They set up their makeshift shops under the flyover, on the south side of Bangabazar Market.

Many traders are sitting with the clothes they were able to save from the devastating fire last Tuesday.

Even though the festive crowd surrounds the shops, the sales have not really started yet.

The temporary shops were supposed to be set up in Bangabazar on Saturday, but it did not take place as authorities said it would take more time to remove the debris from the rubble.

Earlier Salman F Rahman said that businessmen affected by the Bangabazar fire will be given the opportunity to do business temporarily before Eid to compensate for the loss to some extent.

“As soon as possible this place will be cleaned and the shopkeepers will be seated to make up the losses to some extent. But there are some legal issues here. So, this place cannot be cleared before completing the legal process,” he said to reporters after visiting the area affected by the fire in the Bangabazar.

A businessman named Arifur Rahman set up his shop under the Bangbazar flyover with ladies' items and said: "I had a shop on the second floor of Islamia Market. Now I am selling clothes on the footpath because no one will give me money if I don't sit on the footpath to sell. So I am hoping to sell whatever I can before Eid."

Banga Market businessman Rahim Mia sitting with his shop under the flyover and said: "I had two shops in the wood market. Both shops were gutted. I have no money in my pocket so  I have now set up a temporary shop with the goods I could move from the fire. I will bring more when these are sold out.”

Businessman Shah Alam sitting on the pavement in pyjamas said: “There were two shops in Ardash Market of Bangabazar. Both are burnt to ashes. Could not recover any goods. I bought some new goods and sat with the shop today. People don't yet know about the temporary shops that's why sales are low.”

Meanwhile, bank accounts have been opened to provide financial support to the affected traders.

The information was informed in a press conference organized in Bangabazar on Saturday. A request has been made to send support to that account.
