The government has vaccinated some 1,917 stray and pet dogs of St Martin's Island, the lone coral island of the country, under the Dog Vaccination Drive (MDV).

The MDV was conducted for seven consecutive days from March 21 under the Zoonotic Disease Control Program of the National Rabies Eradication Program.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) implemented the scheme in association with the Department of Disease Control (CDC), the Department of Livestock, and the Department of Local Government.

Six skilled teams of the DGHS gave rabies vaccines to prevent the spread of the communicable disease. The total number of vaccinated dogs is 1,917, which is more than 70% of the total number of dogs on the island, which is a key tourist destination.

DGHS MDV expert Dr M Mujibur Rahman said alongside vaccination, sterilization is the only sustainable and scientific solution to reduce and control the dog population on the island.

He suggested that the dogs be brought under responsible parenting or ownership or adoption and that the food waste management be done properly.

“It is very important to sterilize dogs following international standards with the mutual coordination of the stakeholders to preserve biodiversity on the island,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
