Environmentailsts formed human chains in Dhaka's Trimohani, Khilgaon areas demanding all the rivers of Bangladesh be free from encroachment and pollution ahead of International Day of Action for Rivers on Monday.
The program was organized by Barogram Development Organization, Barogram Balu River Morcha and Waterkeepers Bangladesh with the theme of Protect River Rights, reads a press release.
Speakers in the program said: "Today is the International Day of Action for Rivers. The day has been celebrated all over the world since 1998. The decision to observe the day was made in March 1997 at an international gathering held in Curitias, Brazil.
”Observance of such a day was started to remind everyone what we can do about the river, what responsibility we have to protect the river, how much responsibility we have, to realize it and remind everyone about it,” he added.
Barogram Development Organization President Md Suruj Miah, General Secretary Md Amjad Hossain, Ibnul Saeed Rana from Nirapod Development Foundation, Sampriti and Souhadya Club Founder President Ahad Khan were present in the gathering among others.
A sports competition and prize distribution ceremony will be held at Basila Old Primary School premises on Tuesday on the initiative of Waterkeepers Bangladesh.
Also, on the occasion of International Day of Action for Rivers, a boat trip from Basila to Sadarghat has organized jointly by Waterkeepers Bangladesh and National River Alliance.
Preparations have been completed to celebrate the day in different places of the country including Mongla of Bagerhat, Kalapara of Patuakhali, Moheshkhali of Cox's Bazar, Taltali of Barguna.
