The court sent them to jail after fixing Monday for the hearing on their bail plea

Two Bangla Tribune employees have been picked up by police from their Mohammadpur homes on charges of mugging.

Md Sabbir and Md Babu were sued in a case filed with Mohammadpur police station. They were produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court on Sunday.

The court sent them to jail after fixing Monday for the hearing on their bail plea.

Family members said Md Sabbir and Md Babu returned home from work and went to bed on Saturday night. After a while, at around 1am, policemen from Hazaribagh outpost came to their houses and picked them up.

Sabbir's wife Sathi told Bangla Tribune that their neighbor Ontor was called up by police earlier in the day. She suspects Sabbir has been implicated in a mugging after the police interrogated Ontor.

On the other hand, Babu's mother Lucky Begum told Bangla Tribune that her son lives with the family in Rayerbazar, but in the case statement he was shown as a vagabond mugger.

The case statement says that a group of muggers gathered around Boishakhi ground in the area and were planning to carry out a crime. Later, they fled the scene sensing the presence of law enforcers. However, with the help from local people, police managed to nab a couple of the suspected muggers.

Md Rabiul Islam, Rayerbazar outpost in-charge, had led the law enforcement team that picked up the two men.

When asked how the police spotted and detained the duo from around Boishakhi ground and later picked them up from their homes as well, Md Rabiul could not give any proper answer and tried to avoid the question.

He claimed that the arrest was made based on information gleaned from a mugger named Ontor.

Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge at Mohammadpur police station, gave a similar answer to Bangla Tribune and clarified that there was no prior record of criminal activities against the arrestees.

A local cleaner was mentioned as a witness in the case statement. When Bangla Tribune wanted to know about the incident, cleaner Kabir Hossain said that he only gave the addresses to the cops but he had no clue what actually happened.
