Update : 24 Dec 2022, 04:29 PM

The 22nd National Council of Awami League has begun its session to select new leadership.

Party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the second session of the conference at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital at 3pm on Saturday.

About 7,000 councillors from all over the country are participating in the council session. Based on their opinion, the president and general secretary of the party will be elected. They will form a central committee of 81 members.

With the completion of the second session under the leadership of PM Sheikh Hasina, the previous committee will be abolished. The responsibility for electing the new committee will be handed over to the Election Commission (EC).

In the meantime, a three-member election commission has been formed with Yusuf Hossain Humayun, a member of the party's advisory council, as the chairman to select the new leadership of the Awami League. The other two members of the commission are - Prime Minister's advisor Dr Moshiur Rahman and Advisory Council member Sahabuddin Chuppu.

Generally, the overall power of selecting the leadership in other positions of the party is vested in the hands of the party chief. The party chief then discusses with the senior leaders of the party and take the final decision.
