7 injured in clash between Argentina-Brazil supporters in Kushtia

At least seven people were injured in a clash between supporters of Argentina and Brazil football teams over the Fifa World Cup final game in Qatar on Sunday night.

The clash took place in Sadar Upazila's Haripur village when Argentina won the cup beating defending champion France in a penalty shootout.

The injured are Mofazzal, 45, Sayem Ali, 55, Amit, 23, Jewel, 35, Shipon, 37, Bijoy, 35, and Chad Ali, 36.

Five of the injured have been admitted to Kushtia General Hospital. Of them, two were in critical condition. Others were released after receiving primary treatment.

According to police, locals gathered in front of Haripur Market to watch the final game on a big screen. Argentina fans were cheering throughout the game as their team was leading 2-0. 

On the other hand, Brazil fans were supporting France and when the European giants equalized at the 80th minute, they started chanting slogans.

This caused a tension between the two sets of fans and when Argentina won the match, a clash ensued between the supporters.

On information, police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Kushtia Model police station Officer-in-Charge OC Delwar Hossain said that there was a fight between two fans over watching the game. Later, additional members of police were deployed. 

No written complaint has been filed yet in this connection, he added.
