Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Friday announced its "Investigative Journalism Awards 2022" during a program held at its office in the capital's Dhanmondi.
This year, Bangla daily Prothom Alo's senior reporter Asaduzzaman received the award at the national level in print category.
He received the award for his report series titled “Cyber Crime-1: 97% of cases unsolved', “Cyber Crime-2: Cases highest in Dhaka, Chittagong” and “Cyber Crime-3: Planned Cyber Crime is comparatively less.”
Abul Hasan, correspondent of Khulna's The Daily Purbanchal and Apoorba Alauddin, editor of Jamuna Television's investigation team in television media, received the TIB award at the regional level.
Channel 24's “Searchlight” won the documentary program category.
On the same day, TIB organized a round table discussion titled “Data Journalism in Prevention of Corruption: Perspective Bangladesh”, to celebrate the International Anti-Corruption Day.
During the discussion, speakers said although data journalism plays a major role in investigative journalism, the legal framework of Bangladesh is a major challenge in the field of data journalism.
CourtesyAs a challenge, the speakers also said, the data is not easily available due to political reasons even when the government formulates the policy.
However, Mohammad Tauhidul Islam, coordinator of TIB's outreach and communication department, said that data journalism has shown a new way in uncovering corruptions of the individuals those who exercise power.
Dhaka Tribune Executive Editor Reaz Ahmad compared the government's declaration of critical information infrastructure to 29 organizations under the Digital Security Act with the British-era Official Secrets Act.
According to the latest Data Barometer report, Bangladesh scored 23.8 out of 100, which is lower than the average score for Southeast Asia.
Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIGN) Roving Asia Editor Miraj Ahmed Chowdhury, TIB Executive Management Consultant Sumaiya Khair, TIB Director Sheikh Manzoor-e-Alam, Channel 24 Executive Director Talat Mamun and Management and Resources Development Initiative Investigative Journalism Help Desk Head Badruddoza Babu were present in the event.
