Projonmo '71, an organization of children of martyrs of the Liberation War, has demanded not to give registration to the anti-liberation war political parties including Bangladesh Development Party (BDP).
They submitted a memorandum containing this demand to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Thursday.
In the memorandum signed by the organization's President Asif Munir and General Secretary Kazi Saifuddin Abbas, it said: “Some of the ideological crises of the liberation war have come to our attention around the upcoming 12th national parliament elections. We have learned that Bangladesh Development Party (BDP) has applied for registration ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.”
Several news media said that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has direct and indirect links with this party. Not only is it a part of Jamaat-e-Islami, which is not eligible for elections, it was learned that a party from Jamaat has applied for registration under the name of “Amar Bangladesh Party”. Jamaat has taken the initiative to register under a different name due to the difficulty of getting into public politics, said media sources.
They said that they had come to know that BDP has been formed by the leaders of Jamaat, whose registration has been cancelled by the court. When told about such allegations, Election Commissioner Mohammad Alamgir told reporters that Jamaat can get registered with the Election Commission under a different name by fulfilling the conditions.
Such statement of the election commissioner is worrying and to alarming us, they added.
