A young man has been detained for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl in Cox's Bazar city area.
Cox's Bazar Sadar police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Nurul Absar said that the incident took place on Saturday afternoon, said police sources on Sunday afternoon.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital.
The detained 18-year-old youth is a resident of the area. He is an eighth grader of a madrasa in Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila.
The victim's father said that his wife went to work at a relative's house on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, their daughter was lured by a young man studying in the neighbouring madrasa. Later, he raped the girl in the absence of her parents.
He said: “A woman named Monwara Begum was staying in the house neighbouring the suspect. She heard screams of a child and looked inside the suspect's house and saw the rape incident.”
The child's father also said: "At one point, my wife returned from the neighbouring relative's house and started calling their daughter. Hearing the mother's call, the girl screamed.”
“At that time, the accused youth tried to run away from the scene,” he said, adding: “Later, the locals chased him. My daughter was then rescued and admitted to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital."
The incident was reported to the police by calling 999 and later the police arrived at the scene and arrested the accused youth.
“The youth confessed to his crime adding that he had molested the child two-three times in the past,” the father of the victim said.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital Md Ashikur Rahman said that a girl who was raped was brought to the hospital on Saturday evening. She was admitted to the hospital's One Stop Crisis Centre. The child victim is now in stable condition.
The incident can be confirmed after receiving the medical report of the child's physical examination, said the RMO.
SI Nurul Absar said that the victim's father filed a complaint at the police station on Sunday morning accusing a youth. The case will be registered after preliminary investigation of the incident.
