Health Minister Zahid Maleque has said while the health authorities are making preparations for the treatment of dengue patients, killing Aedes mosquitoes, which causes the disease, is not their duty.
He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Abul Hossain Respiratory and Pneumonia Research Centre at Shishu Hospital in the capital on Thursday.
Dhaka North City Corporation Hospital, BSMMU's new hospital unit and Lalkuthi Hospital had been readied for dengue patients, he added.
The health minister said: “On behalf of the health sector, an advisory campaign is being conducted to tell people to increase cleanliness in homes and to protect themselves from mosquito bites.”
“But it is not the duty of the health sector to kill mosquitoes. City corporation and municipal representatives have been urged to highlight the importance of mosquito control,” he added.
The health minister pointed out that if the number of mosquitos decreased, so would the number of dengue cases.
