Independent candidate Advocate Hafizur Rahman has been elected as chairman in the Patuakhali Zilla Parishad election. He got 582 votes contesting in Monday’s polls with the horse symbol.
His nearest rival Khalilur Rahman Mohan, the Awami League-backed candidate with pineapple symbol, received 486 votes.
Voting was held from 9am to 2pm in eight upazilas of Patuakhali, the only district in Barisal Division to see a chairman election. The chairman candidates in five other districts were elected unopposed.
Earlier, Amin Ul Ahsan, divisional commissioner, SM Aktaruzzaman, deputy inspector general of police of Barisal range, Mohammad Kamal Hossain, deputy commissioner, Saidul Islam, district police superintendent, and election officials visited various polling stations of Patuakhali.
AL-nominated candidate and former district council chairman Khalilur Rahman Mohan, independent candidates Hafizur Rahman and Maksudur Rahman contested for the chairman post, while 23 candidates for the general member posts and seven candidates for the reserved women member posts.
After the declaration of the unofficial results on Monday evening, the leaders of the district unit AL were saddened by the loss and did not agree to make any comment immediately.
The winning candidate, Hafizur Rahman, thanked all the voters, Election Commission, the administration and related parties and said he would try his best to fulfill all the promises.
