Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on Wednesday said that the disappearance of Rahima Begum, who was found alive in Faridpur, was not an incident of abduction.
They are suspecting Rahima Begum’s second husband Belal Ghatak alias Belal Hawladar.
PBI also commented that all the information provided by Rahima Begum to PBI and to the court is incorrect. However, the information received so far is being verified.
After visiting Faridpur, the investigation officer is scheduled to go to Bandarban to uncover further information as she reportedly went there as well.
“We are cross-checking all the information received from Rahima. The information given by her is misleading. The investigating officer visited the house of Quddus in Syedpur village of Faridpur on Tuesday and found some important information. Rahima went to Islampur in Bandarban Sadar. The information there will also be verified. The investigation will continue,” said SP Syed Mushfiqur Rahman of PBI Khulna.
PBI hopes to get proper information after interrogating Rahima's second husband Belal Howladar - a suspect in this case.
A remand application has been made to the court for questioning him. The report will be given to the court after the investigation of this case then the court will direct the next action regarding the whole case, added SP Syed Mushfiqur.
The PBI spokesperson said that Rahima Begum mentioned that after being abducted on the night of August 27, she found out she was in the Chittagong Hill Tracts after regaining consciousness and reading a signboard there.
From there she applied to work at Moni Begum Bhat Hotel in the Bandarban area. The hotel owner offered her a job in a local camp and asked for her birth certificate and NID card.
To collect her birth registration and NID card, she went to the house of her acquaintance Quddus Molla in Syedpur village of Boalmari upazila of Faridpur district.
On September 16 she went to Syedpur Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Haque to ask for her birth registration citing living in Bagerhat due to her work as a domestic help there.
The Syedpur UP chairman however denied her the opportunity to get birth registration and NID claiming he had his suspicions.
On August 27, Rahima allegedly went missing while fetching water near her home in the Banikpara area.
Her children reportedly found her sandals, scarf and the pitcher she was carrying from the spot and reported it to the police.
As many as six people were arrested till September 12 over the incident.
However, police suspect that she had left her home due to some family dispute over land.
She had been hiding at the residence of Kuddus Molla who used to live in Rahima Begum’s house on rent.
She recently had some disagreement with her second husband over various family matters, and left her home, according to police
Now PBI Inspector Abdul Mannan is investigating this case.
On September 22, Rahima's daughter Maryam Akhtar alias Maryam Mannan claimed to have found her mother's body and consented to DNA profiling.
On September 24, an application was made to the Mymensingh court for DNA profiling. The court allowed DNA profiling after a hearing on September 25.
Meanwhile, the police rescued Rahima Begum alive from Syedpur of Boalmari upazila of Faridpur on Saturday (September 24) night.
When Rahima was handed over to the court on the afternoon of September 25, she claimed that she had been kidnapped in her statement under section 22.
Later in the evening, the court released her on Aduri's bail. Later that night, daughters Mariom and Aduri left for Dhaka with their mother.
Currently, Rahima Begum is undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
