Man fined Tk50,000 for carrying rare hoolock gibbon

The accused was taking the rare animal to Khulna-Satkhira border to smuggle it to India

A young man was fined Tk50,000 for carrying a rare hoolock gibbon on an AC bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Comilla .

The arrestee was identified as Md Jewel Rahman Sohel, 27. 

The hoolock gibbon was seized from the Khulna-bound “Imperial Express” which was kept parked in front of Green View Hotel in Miabazar area of Chauddagram Upazila.

A team of detective branch of police of Comilla arrested Jewel from the bus on charge of poaching the animal, said Rajesh Barua, officer-in-charge of DB police. 

Later, Executive Magistrate Atish Sarker fined Jewel Tk 50,000 under the Wildlife Conservation and Safety Act.

In a primary interrogation, Jewel confessed that he collected the rare animal from Bandarban and was taking it to Khulna-Satkhira border to smuggle it to India.

The seized animal was handed over to the concerned Forest Department, said the OC.

Comilla Zone Forest officer Mohammad Ali said that they received the animal. It is a rare species in Bangladesh. They will send it back to Chittagong divisional forest office.
