The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Shipping has recommended regular dredging of inland waterways from Dhaka to Rabnabad channel of Payra.
The 48th meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee was held on Sunday at the Sangsad Bhaban.
The committee chairman Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam Bir Uttam presided over the meeting attended by committee members Mahfuzur Rahman, M Abdul Latif, Shamil Uddin Ahmed Shimul, Aslam Hossain Saudagar and SM Shahzada, among others.
According to the meeting, Payra Port Authority said that 890 ships have anchored at Payra Port so far of which 246 are foreign ships. The government's income from this is Tk581,99,00,000.
Payra Port Authority told the committee that handling of food grains, fertilizers, imported vehicles and other commercial goods will start through transhipment due to the increase in service jetties and ships of the port.
The committee also held discussions on making the Bangladesh Flag Vessels Interests Protection Rules 2021 under the Bangladesh Flag Ships Interests Protection Act 2019.
