Govt issues circular on IGP Benazir’s retirement

Benazir Ahmed will be succeeded by RAB DG Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun

The government has issued an official circular saying that Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed will be retiring on September 30. 

The Public Security Division of the home ministry issued a circular in this regard on Thursday.

IGP Benazir Ahmed will reach retirement age on September 30 and in keeping with the law is going into post-retirement leave (PRL).

He will be succeeded by Rapid Action Battalion Director General Abdullah Al Mamun. 

According to the cicular, he will be eligible for 18 months' basic salary and a retirement leave from October 1 till September 30, 2023. 

Benazir, the former DG of RAB was appointed to the top post of IGP on April 8, 2020. 

The senior police official joined Bangladesh Police Service as Assistant Superintendent of Police in February 1988.

He served in various capacities of Bangladesh Police where he proved his professionalism, dedication and excellence.

He has served in various capacities of Bangladesh including superintendent of police in various districts, deputy police commissioner north, Dhaka metropolitan police, assistant inspector general of police, police headquarters, deputy inspector general (finance) and deputy inspector general (admin & ops), police headquarters, police commissioner, Dhaka metropolitan police. 

He also served as the chief instructor in Bangladesh police academy, Sardah and as commandant of police training center, Tangail.

Benazir has served in the UN Mission in Bosnia (UNMIBH) and UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and also worked as the Chief of “Mission Management & Support Section”, police division, Department of Peace Keeping Operations, United Nations Headquarters, New York and as the OIC of the Police Division of UNDPKO.

From January 2015 to April 14, 2022 he served as the RAB director general. 

The UN also appointed him as an Expert member in a Global Level “Independent Panel” to review the UN Police Division (December 2015- May 2016).

He has received different accolades, awards and medals for his outstanding and glorious professionalism and dedication including the Inspector General Police Exemplary Good Services Badge, UN Medal for the Service for Peace in Bosnia-1996, in Kosovo-2003, UN HQ, USA-2009 and outstanding Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) in 2011, 2012,2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019.
