Dhaka traffic has come to a near standstill as incessant rain caused heavy gridlocks throughout the capital.
On Tuesday, commuters, especially those taking the Airport Road suffered the most as many reported sitting in traffic for long hours causing many to miss flights and be late to the office.
While Google Maps is a sea of red, angry and frustrated commuters took to social media platforms such as Facebook to vent.
Many have been posting photos of the traffic congestion in different areas since morning.
Meanwhile, the gridlock at the Airport Road intensified further as rainwater accumulated in the Cherag Ali Bazar of Tongi in Gazipur.
The Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has also published a “traffic bulletin” in this regard.
According to the bulletin, vehicles have been moving in one lane from both directions due to a whole dug for the pier cap of the flyover in the Mill Gate area of The Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway,
The road was further blocked by the tin barricade around the pit and the trenches have not been repaired.
Additional traffic officers have been deployed on the highway in an effort to keep the traffic movement uninterrupted on both sides of the road, the bulletin read.
The bulletin added that heavy rain since Monday night complicated the situation and although the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) has been able to keep the traffic normal in other areas, the suffering of the commuters became extreme due to the infrastructural weakness of the BRT project in Tongi-Mill Gate area.
The traffic jam on the Dhaka-Mymensingh road has extended to the ECB square in Mirpur.
The situation worsened as road repair works, construction of the metro rail and Dhaka Elevated Expressway projects added to the commuters’ woes.
Office-goers say that since the introduction of the new office schedule, the level of traffic congestion has become intense as the office and school times are together in the morning.
However, the picture was completely different in the capital's Pragati Sarani. After 12pm, the road from Notun Bazar to Moghbazar Flyover was found to be completely empty.
Meanwhile, the movement of traffic from Kuril Flyover to Gulistan has come to a standstill.
Many were seen walking to their destination on either side of the road while Gulistan-bound passengers from Notun Bazar were waiting for vehicles at various spots.
People have been traveling by rickshaw or CNG due to a crisis of public transport.
When asked about the opposite situations on the road, the traffic sergeant of the North Badda area said: "There was no accident, we have only heard that the cars have been stalled in the Gazipur area.”
