Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) have decided to cut down bus fares by 5 poisha (Tk0.05) per kilometre following the recent reduction in fuel prices to alleviate the pressure on commuters.
As per the new decision, Intercity bus fare was fixed at Tk2.45 per kilometre and long-distance bus fare was fixed at Tk2.15.
The decision was taken in a meeting with the bus owners at the BRTA head office in Banani on Wednesday.
The authorities on August 7 increased the fare for long-distance buses by 22% to Tk2.2 per kilometre, fare for buses in Dhaka by 16.27% to Tk2.50 per kilometre and fare for buses outside the capital by 17% to Tk2.4 following an increase in fuel oil prices.
The government on Monday announced that it had reduced fuel oil prices by Tk5 per litre to alleviate the pressure on consumers caused by the recent price hikes due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The price reduction applies to all three major petroleum products, namely petrol, octane and diesel.
In line with the new decision, diesel and kerosene will cost Tk109 per litre, petrol Tk125, and octane Tk130. The new prices came into effect on Tuesday.
