A Dhaka court on Sunday fixed September 25 for pronouncing judgement against expelled Juba League leader Golam Kibria Shamim alias GK Shamim and seven others in an arms case filed with Gulshan police station.

Judge Sheikh Shamidul Islam of Dhaka's Third Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Court set the date as both prosecution and defence concluded their arguments in the case.

During the closing arguments, prosecution confirmed the charges against the accused and sought capital punishment for all in the case.

The defence lawyers told the court that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against the accused and sought acquittal for their clients.

Eight of the accused – now in jail – were produced before the court during the hearing on Sunday.

The other accused in the case are GK Shamim’s bodyguards Delwar Hossain, Murad Hossain, Jahidul Islam, Shahidul Islam, Kamal Hossain, Samsad Hossain and Aminul Islam.

A total of 10 out of 19 prosecution witnesses testified in the case.

Earlier on September 21, 2019, Rapid Action Battalion 1 (RAB)-1 Nayek Subedar Mizanur Rahman filed the case against GK Shamim and his bodyguards for their possession of arms.

On September 20, RAB arrested GK Shamim and seized Tk1.80 crore in cash, Tk165.27 crore worth of fixed deposit receipts (FDR), alcohol and firearms from his Niketon residence in Dhaka's Gulshan area.

During the raid, RAB also arrested seven of his bodyguards and seized their arms.

On October 27, 2019, RAB Deputy Director Shekhar Chandra Mallik, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the court against the accused.

Later on January 28, 2020, the court framed charges against all the accused in the case.
