Experts stress importance on food security in national fisheries policy

Food security will yield better marine fish production, they said

Speakers at a dialogue in Cox's Bazar said that food security should be given importance in the national fisheries policy for better yield in marine fish production and earn foreign exchange in return.

Their statement was made during a dialogue organized by WorldFish at a Cox's Bazar hotel conference room around 10am on Sunday.

Md Atiar Rahman, additional director general of the Department of Fisheries, said: “ID cards of fishermen are very important. However, at present, it is not possible to provide ID cards to all fishermen. In the future, it will be possible to bring all the fishermen under the system.”

Cox's Bazar Marine Center of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute Chief Scientific Officer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said: “Due to climate change, there has been a huge change in the sea. The matter should be taken seriously and a plan should be taken to protect the coasts.”

“Recently, there have been reports of several jellyfish getting stuck on the coast and dying. Many assume that jellyfish are harmful creatures but that is a misconception. I would say jellyfish are significant marine animals and they must be saved,” he added.

Md Atiar Rahman, ADG of Directorate of Fisheries, was the chief guest in the dialogue program which began with the welcome speech by Dr Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, WorldFish technical team leader. Shafiqur Rahman, chief scientific officer of Cox's Bazar Marine Center of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute was the special guest.

The dialogue program was chaired by Mokarrom Hossain. Shamima Soltana, assistant producer of Deepto Krishi, Dr Mohammad Sharif Uddin, Dr Nahiduzzamam spoke at the event among others.

Shahidul Alam Chowdhury, Shakhawat Kabir Chowdhury, Dr Manjurul Karim, Dr Benoy Kumar Barman, and Peerzadi Rumana Hossain presented various research papers on marine fisheries.

Teachers, fisheries scientists, researchers and related people from various universities of the country participated in this day-long dialogue.
