Overcharged bus fares infuriate commuters

On Monday, various roads of the capital seemed to have more buses compared to the last two days

Passengers are complaining of being charged extra bus fares on different roads of the capital.

They said that bus helpers are charging fares as per their wish because the new fare chart by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had not yet been given.

On Monday, various roads of the capital, including Mirpur, Gabtoli, Asadgate and Farmgate, seemed to have more buses compared to the last two days.

However, commuters claimed that the middle class remains disturbed by these fares.

While waiting for a bus, Sujan said: “After the increase in the bus fares, I haven’t noticed the government or related authorities paying attention to the kind of surveillance that is needed to oversee everything.”

A college student said: “Since the increase in the price of oil, the suffering of students has also increased. Even though they are supposed to take half the fare, in many cases they are demanding more fare.”

Claiming to not have received a fare chart, helper Shajahan of Robrob Paribahan bus blamed the passengers.

He said: “We calculate the fare per kilometre. But commuters argue with us, they even assault us.”

Meanwhile, mobile court operations were conducted in Gabtoli in a continuation of the process to monitor the issue of additional fare collection by BRTA.

Executive Magistrate Mohammad Juber Alam told the media that the authorities were working in the field and taking action as per various complaints of passengers.
