Hundreds of motorcyclists were seen crossing the Padma River in ferry at Shimulia ghat on Friday, following ban of the two-wheelers on Padma Bridge.
Ferry “Ro Ro Comilla’ left the Shimulia terminal with 107 motorcycles around 5pm on Fridat+yevening. Earlier, the same ferry left for Majhirkandi around 11am with 100 motorcycles on board, said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) spokesperson Faisal Ahmed.
He added: “Ferries are plying with motorcycles under special considerations keeping the Eid holidays in mind.”
Ferry services from Shimulia terminal have been suspended since the Padma Bridge was opened to traffic on June 26. BIWTA authorities said the ferry service was suspended due to the navigability crisis.
Earlier, two people were killed in a motorcycle accident on June 26, the first day the bridge was opened to the public.
Since then, the two-wheelers have been banned by the government to curn road accidents on the bridge.
Following the move, bikers have been protesting the decision and resorted to crossing the bridge carrying the vehicles on pickup vans.
Motorcyclists were also seen crossing the river in trawlers as authorities banned launches from carrying two-wheelers as well as on highways.
