Grow Your Reader Foundation expands project ‘Book Garage’

They have 19 street libraries with 1,500 books across Bangladesh so far

Grow Your Reader Foundation (GYRF) expanded their project “Book Garage” to Jamalpur district on July 1.

It was completed in association with Milon Smrity Pathagar where they placed four different street libraries on a 6km road from Dhanbari in Tangail to Tarakandi in Jamalpur beside the Jhinai river, said a press release on Monday.

They inaugurated these street libraries together with locals, many dignitaries and social workers said a press release issued on Monday.

Sadia Jafrin, founder of Grow Your Reader Foundation, said: “Our dream is to establish street libraries on every street in Bangladesh. We call this our ‘Book Garage’ project, where people can read books from our street library. 

“Currently, we have 19 street libraries across Bangladesh. We have placed 1,500 books in these street libraries in Dhaka, Tangail, Chittagong, and Jamalpur regions. We want people to gather knowledge and awaken their hidden minds so that they can develop empathy.”

To mark the occasion, their volunteers painted all the villages with pictures and doodles, especially to inspire children to increase their interest in books. 

Local residents also showed great enthusiasm and donated books for these street libraries.

The main theme of the Book Garage project is “Leave your old books behind, so people who don’t have the means can pick up and discover a new book for free”.

“Milon Smriti Library” a local library, is the supervisory partner associated with Grow Your Reader in Jamalpur for the “Book Garage”.They will take overall care of this library.

Throughout the event, the communication agency “Bullseye” has worked as a strategic partner with Grow Your Reader Foundation.

This Book Garage project is funded by Global Youth Mobilization, a joint venture of the Big Six Organization, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Foundation.
