At least 20 people were injured in clashes between the activists of ruling Awami League and BNP over chanting slogans marking Independence Day in Lakshmipur’s Ramgati Upazila on Saturday.
Ramgati unit BNP General Secretary Jamal Uddin and Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) President Didar were detained from the spot, said Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain of Ramgati police station.
The tension ensued when the Awami League activists were returning after paying tributes at a local memorial and the BNP supporters were walking towards their party office in Alexander Bazar area.
According to police and locals, a severe clash erupted between the groups when the BNP supporters chanted slogans with sticks in their hands. They also hurled bricks at one another.
Later, the BNP leaders and activists alleged that the Awami League members vandalized the party office. A number of motorbikes were also vandalized after the clash, they claimed.
Police said that the local Awami League leaders were preparing to file a case in this regard.
