Planning Minister MA Mannan on Saturday said the supply of electricity will become normal soon and the ongoing electricity crisis will be resolved as ships transporting coal for power plants are en route to Bangladesh.
“The country's power issues will see an immediate resolution. Ships carrying coal for our power plants are on their way. In addition, we are sourcing electricity from India's Adani power plant as well,” he told journalists at a roundtable in Sunamganj.
The planning minister said the government is anticipating that the power supply will be back to normal within the next two weeks.
“This has been confirmed by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, in whom I have complete confidence,” he said, urging the people to forgive him should the situation not be rectified within this timeframe.
Earlier on Saturday morning, the Chinese ship MV Zhe Hai, carrying 26,620 tons of coal from Indonesia for the Rampal power plant in Bagerhat, docked at Mongla port.
Preceding this, two Bangladeshi-flagged vessels, MV Basundhara Impress and MV Basundhara Majesty, arrived on May 16 and May 29, respectively, carrying 30,000 tons and 30,500 tons of coal each for the Rampal power plant.
The recent coal shortage has had severe consequences, causing the shutdown of the Payra power plant last Monday and then the Banshkhali power plant on Friday.
