Rana Mia, 24, joined the fire service two years ago. It was his first job.

Rana was overjoyed to get the job. Whenever he came to work from the scene of an accident, he would share the incident with his family members.

In these two years he has rescued many people, live and dead. He used to mourn for the dead peoples. But no one knew he would die in such an accident, Shekh Rasel, brother-in-law of Rana, said.

“He was very cautious. But an accident ended it all. Such a death is by no means acceptable,” Rasel added.

Relatives identified his body from the morgue of Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Sunday afternoon, Chittagong district PBI Inspector Monir Hossain confirmed.

The club logo on the T-shirt on the victim’s body and some facial hair, which somehow survived the fire helped Rana’s family to identify his half-charred body.

“Before going to the site of the fire, Rana could not inform us where he was going. We suddenly learned that he died while trying to put out the fire,” Rasel said.

"Rana and I trained together at Rajshahi fire service and civil defense station,” Rakibul Islam Rakib, a firefighter at Kalurghat fire station, said while speaking of his friend and colleague.

“After training, he was posted in the Sitakundo station. He was a very skilled firefighter, more skilled than me,” he said.

"This could have been me instead of Rana," as sobbing Rakib told Dhaka Tribune.

At least eight firefighters, who were extinguishing fire that broke out at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila on Saturday night, have died and three others remained missing following a subsequent explosion.
