The severe cyclonic storm Asani over West Central Bay and adjoining areas has moved north-westwards and weakened into a cyclonic storm, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
It lay centred over West Central Bay off India’s Andhra coast at 6am on Wednesday, read a special weather bulletin by the BMD.
The storm will likely move in a northwest/northerly direction and gradually weaken into a deep depression during the next 24 hours, it added.

The cyclone is likely to trigger rain in most parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, until the evening. But the rainfall may not be continuous.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, and at many places in Rangpur division, with moderately heavy to very heavy rain at different places across the country, the BMD said.
Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, it added.
The BMD said the sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre.
The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep Distant Warning Signal No 2 hoisted. Hoisting of this signal is advised if a storm (wind speed of 62-88km/hour) forms in the distant deep sea and there is a chance of ships falling in danger if they leave harbour.
All fishing boats and trawlers in North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.
