Post-Eid rush heading towards capital

Dhaka’s Sadarghat, and ferry terminals in Manikganj and Munshiganj teeming with returnees

Update : 06 May 2022, 08:13 PM

As offices are set to reopen Sunday, people were seen returning to the capital on Friday.

The holidaymakers were seen in great numbers at the Sadarghat launch terminal in Dhaka and the ferry terminals in Paturia, Daulatdia, and Shimulia.

Thousands of people, who left the bustling city of Dhaka to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their dear ones at village homes, continued returning to the capital on Friday.

Employees of government and private offices got a long vacation this year as the weekend holidays and the May Day holiday merged with the Eid holidays.

Those wishing to avoid the rush of returnees from Saturday started to return to Dhaka in advance from Thursday. People were seen emerging from inter-district launches with luggage at the Sadarghat terminal from early morning.

However, the rush of returnees was thinner than the pre-Eid time at the terminal due to an adequate number of launches coming from different destinations.

Meanwhile, many people were seen leaving Dhaka for destinations including Chandpur, Muladi, Charfassion, Bhola and Shariatpur on Friday.

Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, president of Bangladesh Inland Waterways Passenger Carrier Association, said that the passengers were returning Dhaka comfortably after enjoying Eid holidays.

He said that an adequate number of launches were ready to carry the returnees.

A similar scenario was witnessed at Paturia ferry terminal area where people in thousands thronged to cross the mighty Padma River through various means of transport.

Small ferries were seen ferrying on-foot passengers and motorcycles while the heavier ones were carrying buses and other vehicles on the route.

According to the dock authorities, people from 21 districts of the south-western region of the country are returning to the capital through the route.

Officials said that they had suspended launch movement on the route to ease river traffic during the Eid holidays.

Passengers at the ferry terminal also expressed satisfaction while traveling on the route, saying that this year they had suffered less while going to village homes and during their return.

Garment factories, banks and businesses in Dhaka reopened on Thursday, but the attendance in offices was poor while the number of public transport and rickshaws on the streets was very few.
