An initiative taken by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has assisted the prison authorities to curb transmission of Covid-19 at 68 prisons across the country last year.
Katja Lorenz, head of delegation in ICRC Bangladesh, said some 77,208 detainees benefited from the program so far.
She made the statement at a virtual press conference on Monday.
Katja Lorenz said: “The ICRC has also installed three covid-19 isolation centres in Keraniganj, Feni, and Kishoreganj prisons with basic medical and sanitation equipment and furniture.”
Meanwhile, 826 military and police personnel were trained in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law by the organization.
The ICRC also assisted 3,613 people with disabilities last year amid the pandemic.
Katja Lorenz said people with disabilities are fitted with prostheses and orthoses and provided with physiotherapy services or assistive devices.
Germain Mwehu, communication and prevention coordinator of ICRC, spoke at the press conference as well.
