The Covid-19 infection rate in Chittagong has been creeping closer to the 5% danger mark in recent weeks.
Chittagong district recorded a Covid-19 test positivity rate of 4.41% with 82 fresh cases reported after testing 1,857 new samples at 12 laboratories on Friday. The test positivity rate in the district had hovered at around 1% for the past few months.
An average of 10 new infections were reported each day in December. However, the number of positive cases has been increasing faster since the Omicron variant arrived in the country at the turn of the year, Chittagong District Civil Surgeon Dr Elius Chowdhury told Dhaka Tribune.
He urged the public to maintain hygiene and to wear masks properly.
The government has already imposed various restrictions in an attempt to slow the surge in the pandemic.
According to experts, the detection rate will continue to rise as the number of tests conducted increases. Furthermore, the virus will spread more quickly if people do not take caution.
Among the 82 fresh cases in Chittagong, 74 patients were port city residents. Of the remaining eight, one each were from Anwara, Patia, Boalkhali, and Sandwip upazila, and two each from Hathazari, and Mirsarai.
A total 102,904 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Chittagong, so far. This includes 74,504 residents of Chittagong City.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Chittagong currently stands at 1,333.
