President Abdul Hamid has invited nine more political parties for the talks over the formation of the new Election Commission (EC).
So far, the president has extended the invitation to 25 parties, including these nine, according to the Bangabhaban media wing.
Jamiat Ulama -e Islam has been invited on January 5, Gono Front and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on January 6, Krishak Sramik Janata League and Bangladesh Muslim League on January 9, Jatiya Pary (JP) and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Rob) on January 10, Bangladesh Islami Front and Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP) on January 11, according to the president’s office..
The term of the KM Nurul Huda-led commission expires on February 14.
In the absence of a law to appoint election commissioners, the power to appoint an election commissioner is vested in the president, in line with the Constitution.
The president has opened talks with registered political parties to discuss their views on the formation of a new commission.
