Update : 13 Jul 2021, 08:39 PM

A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed a married couple on a two-day remand in a case filed on charges of possessing counterfeit currency worth Tk43 lakh.

The duo – Abdur Rahim Sheikh and his wife Fatema Begum – were arrested on July 7 from Nurer Chala area of Saidnagar under Vatara police station.

Police say they were captured while selling the fake currency to their dealers, who were likely to circulate it in the cattle market ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shadbir Yeasir Ahasan Chowdhury passed the order on Tuesday after Vatara police Inspector Zahidul Islam, the investigating officer of the case, produced them before the court with a 10-day remand plea.

The court also sent three other accused in the case — dealers Helal Khan, Anwar Hossain and Israfil Amin — to jail until the investigation is completed.

During the raid, police recovered fake 500 and 1,000 taka notes of around Tk43,00,000, and a huge quantity of raw materials.

Police say Abdur Rahim was involved in the fake currency business for 11 years. Helal Khan sponsors the gang. Fatema Begum was earlier arrested in 2019 while producing fake money at a house in Hatirjheel, but her husband escaped.
