A hotel manager and his employee have served nearly five and a half months in jail in a “false” case filed by policemen as they refused to pay bribes.

The duo are now out on bail but have yet to be acquitted of the charges.

“A team of DB police has implicated me in a fake note recovery case as I failed to meet their demand for extortion of Tk3 lakh,” claaimed Hasan Mojumder, manager of Hotel Bandhu at Paltan in the capital.

He said the case was filed against him in connection with the recovery of counterfeit notes worth Tk25 lakh. Later, police produced him before a court which sent him to jail pending an investigation.

Hasan Majumder alleged that a team of eight DB police members from Motijheel zone went to his hotel on November 6, 2016.

They picked him up and his hotel cook, Sohel Rana, and took them to the DB office on the Mintu Road.

“As we didn't meet their demand, they produced us before the court in the false case and the court sent us to jail. Not only that, the DB team also submitted a charge sheet against us,” he added.

“Finally, after nearly five and a half months, we got out of jail on bail in the case,” he told the media.

The victim said that he had filed applications with the police chief, the Prime Minister's Office and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police seeking remedy from this unwanted situation.

On the basis of the applications, three investigation committees had been formed in this connection. The committees in their reports said that they had found evidence of harassment on the hotel manager.

But Mojumder has yet to be acquitted of the charges.

Police Inspector and the plaintiff of the false case, Tapon Kumar Dhali, told Bangla Tribune that he was not ready to talk about the case as it is a subjudice matter.
