Jatiya Party MP Golam Kibria Tipu on Thursday demanded the release of party's Presidium member Nasir U Mahmood, arrested in a case filed by actor Pori Moni on charges of attempted rape and murder.
He placed the demand in Parliament, joining the general discussion on the proposed budget for 2021-22 fiscal year.
“I know Nasir Uddin for about 35 years. I know him since his student life. He is an established businessman and pays taxes,” said Tipu, a lawmaker from from Barisal-3.
In an apparent reference to Pori Moni, Tipu said he had been observing the issue for the last few days.
“The heroine who went to that club knows how to act. On social media, I saw her being taken into a car in someone's lap. In view of all this, I’ll appeal to the government to make sure justice can take its own course. Nasir will have to be acquitted. Law will take its own course but he’ll have to be released,” he said.

The Jatiya Party MP also said he saw on social media that the actress vandalized a club at Gulshan.
“This is a very sensitive issue. I hope the government will look into the matter,” he said.
Tipu also demanded the government ban TikTok by enacting a law to protect the young generation of the country.
Another Jatiya Party MP, Mujibul Haque Chunu, described Nasir Uddin Mahmud as a "good person."
Pori Moni alleged that Nasir had tried to rape her at Dhaka Boat Club in Birulia, Uttara on June 6, an allegation denied by Nasir.
