Low over Bay of Bengal likely to trigger heavy rains

River ports have been asked to hoist warning signal No 1

Update : 11 Jun 2021, 07:24 PM

A depression in the north-western Bay of Bengal and monsoon winds are likely to cause heavy rains in some parts of Bangladesh this week.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has asked the river ports to hoist warning signal No 1 in light of the presence of gusty winds alongside the downpour.

“As the monsoon winds have spread across the country, precipitation is likely to increase this week,” said Meteorologist Abdul Mannan.

At the same time, some parts of the country might experience heavy rains, he added.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty wind is likely to occur at many places in Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, and at a few places in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions, according to the Met Office.

Besides, some areas would see moderately heavy to heavy rainfall within 9am on Saturday, forecast the national meteorological organization.

The highest rainfall in the 24 hours between 9am on Thursday and 9am on Friday was recorded in Netrakona at 76 millimetres.
