Cyclone Yaas weakens into deep depression

Maritime ports in Bangladesh advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3

Cyclone Yaas, which unleashed havoc on India’s Odisha on Wednesday, has weakened into deep depression over North Odisha and adjourning Jharkhand, the Met office said on Thursday.

“It is likely to move north-northwestwards further and weaken gradually. Steep pressure gradient persists over the North Bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh. Sea will be rough,” reads a special bulletin by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued at 6am.

The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three on Thursday morning.

The storm system is likely to move north-north-westwards further and weaken gradually, it said.

The sea will remain rough and a steep pressure gradient persists over north bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh, according to the Met office.

Under its influence, Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalakati, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur and Chittagong districts and their offshore islands, and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 50-60 kph in gusts or squalls.

The low-lying areas of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Bhola, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur and Chittagong districts are likely to be inundated by 02-04 feet height above normal astronomical tide under the influence of steep pressure gradient and the full moon phase.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter until further notice.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has cleared operations of passenger vessels, other than one-engine water boats, with caution.
