The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been asked to hoist distant cautionary signal No 1 as a low-pressure area has formed over the East Central Bay and adjoining area.
Due to the low-pressure, which could intensify into a cyclonic storm and hit Bangladesh on May 26, the fishermen who are already in the deep sea have been advised to return to the coast by Sunday.
Also, others have been advised not to venture into the deep sea, according to the met office bulletin.
“It (the low) is likely to intensify into a depression and further into a deep depression and then into a cyclonic storm,” a Met Office release said in a special weather bulletin.

In a 24-hour forecast commencing 6pm on Saturday, the Bangladesh Meteoritical Department (BMD) said: “A low-pressure area has formed over East Central Bay and adjoining area.”
“It is likely to intensify into a depression and further into a deep depression and then into a Cyclonic Storm. Trough of low lies over West Bengal and adjoining area,” it reads.
Already named as “Cyclone Yaas”, the low-pressure is likely to intensify into a “very severe cyclonic storm” and cross the Odisha and the West Bengal coasts in India on May 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

It may also hit the Khulna coastal region around May 26, the BMD forecast on Thursday.
Once the cyclone forms, it will be the first over the Bay of Bengal this year.
However, while a low-pressure area is the first stage of formation of a cyclone, it is not necessary that all low-pressure areas will intensify into cyclonic storms.
Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka and Chittagong divisions and the region of Kushtia.
Weather may remain dry
Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country.
A mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping over Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions and the regions of Rangamati, Sitakunda, Comilla, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Srimangal, Rajshahi and Pabna and it may continue.
The country’s maximum temperature on Saturday was recorded at 38.8°C in Feni and minimum at 23°C at Syedpur in Rangpur division.
