Daily Covid-19 deaths drop to 38 in Bangladesh as toll nears 12,000

Another 1,514 new infections reported

Bangladesh reported a drop in Covid-19 fatalities on Monday, however, new infections increased from the previous day.

In the 24 hours to Monday morning, the country has logged 38 deaths, taking the total number of fatalities to 11,972. On Sunday, 56 deaths were reported.

According to figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), another 1,514 people tested positive, raising the total caseload to 775,027. 

On Sunday, 1,386 new infections were reported.

Of the 38 deceased – 25 men and 13 women – 15 were from Dhaka division, 11 from Chittagong, six from Rajshahi, three from Sylhet, two from Barisal, and one from Rangpur division.  

Of them, 26 people died in the state-run hospitals, 10 in private hospitals, and two at home.

So far, 8,678 men (72.49%) and 3,294 women (27.51%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since March last year, 6,937 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,220 in Chittagong, 629 in Rajshahi, 725 in Khulna, 364 in Barisal, 415 in Sylhet, 435 in Rangpur, and 247 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.54%.

The DGHS said 16,963 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Sunday and Monday mornings. 

As many as 16,848 samples were tested in the 454 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,514 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 8.99%.

To date, 5,647,742 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.72% so far.   

The health authorities said 2,115 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 712,277 patients – 91.90% – have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2. The country also recorded its first fatality on March 18.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,308,277 lives and infected 159,029,697 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 136,603,382 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
