2 workers die in Gazipur

They were working on an electric pole when the accident took place

Two workers died and one was injured on Tuesday while working on an electric pole in the Tongi area in Gazipur.

The incident took place in front of the Speed Wall CNG station on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at around 3pm.

The deceased were identified as Sohag Sarkar, 25 and Sumon, 45. The injured was identified as Saiful, 26,

They were from Brahmanpara of Jamalpur Sadar upazila and employees of Network Contracting Company.

Tongi East police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Sheikh Sajal Hossain said two of the workers had climbed up the steel electric pole with their safety belts on while another one stood on the ground.

At one point, the pole started to crack at the bottom and the whole structure toppled to the ground. One of the workers, Sohag, was crushed under the pole and died on the spot.

Meanwhile, two other workers were rushed to the local hospital after sustaining critical injuries. They were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment but one of the workers, Sumon, died on the way. 

The bodies were sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsy. 

Saiful was admitted to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) for advanced treatment.

The police official said legal action would be taken in this regard.
