Joy asks embassies not to make hypocritical statements about freedom of speech

'Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, but that freedom ends when you spread falsehoods that end up hurting others'

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has asked the US Embassy in Dhaka and other western embassies to stop making "hypocritical statements" about freedom of speech in Bangladesh in future.

Joy came up with the statement on his verified Facebook page on Saturday after the Twitter and other social media platforms in the US banned the accounts of President Donald Trump along with several other people and organizations on allegations of spreading falsehood that led to violence.

"This is the limit of freedom of speech in the United States," he wrote.

Joy, also the honorary ICT affairs adviser to the prime minister, furthered: "I want the US Embassy in Dhaka, as well as other western embassies to take note of this post. We do not want to see hypocritical statements from you in the future regarding freedom of speech in Bangladesh anymore."

"For all of those who complain about our Digital Security Act," he said, in the US the government "lets private companies dictate."

Joy, also the chairperson of Centre for Research and Information (CRI), said: "In Bangladesh we believe that it should not be up to private companies, but up to the courts to decide.

"Everyone has the right to freedom of speech, but that freedom ends when you spread falsehoods that end up hurting others. No one has the right to hurt others," he added.
