The death of a physically challenged autorickshaw driver in Rangpur on Wednesday, nearly two days after he was picked up by a policeman in connection with the theft of a rickshaw, has triggered allegations of torture perpetrated on the autorickshaw driver.
Auto driver Nazmul Islam used to drive an autorickshaw on hire and owned by police constable Hasan Ali of Rangpur Police Training Centre.
On Monday, the autorickshaw was reportedly stolen and Hasan picked up Nazmul, levelling allegations of theft against him.
The constable took him to his house on the day in Courtpara area of the city. Later, locals found Nazmul hanging from a ceiling in the house and informed police.
On receiving information, police went to the spot and recovered the body.
Local residents alleged that Nazmul was tortured to death as injury marks were found on his body. They also brought out a procession on Wednesday evening and blocked the Lalmonirhat- Kurigram Road demanding the arrest of the police constable and his wife.
Later, police arrested the police constable and his wife Sathi Begum, said Assistant Police Commissioner Md Altaf Hossain.
Nazmul’s body was sent to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.
A case was filed in this connection.
