People have disrespected the national flag by tying it with a broom for hoisting on the Victory Day in two places of Bangladesh.

A security guard of Krishi Bank in Basail, Tangail, hoisted the flag on a broom and was sentenced to 10 days’ imprisonment by a mobile court.

The court's Executive Magistrate and Upazila Executive Officer Shamsun Nahan Swapna passed the order on Wednesday.

The security guard's name is Sultan Ahmed, 54.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamsun Nahar Swapna said all government and non-government organizations were instructed to hoist the national flag on the occasion of the Victory Day.

Disobeying that instruction, the national flag was hung on a broom at the Basail branch of Bangladesh Krishi Bank.

Sultan Ahmed, the bank's security guard, was sentenced to 10 days in jail for insulting the national flag. All those who will do such work will face action under the law, she added. The national flag hanging from a broomstick in a Sonali Bank branch in Manirampur, Jessore on December 16, 2020 Dhaka TribuneAccording to the Bangladesh National Anthem, Flag and Emblem Order, 1972, anyone disobeying any provision of the order - which includes respecting the national flag - shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year or with fine which may extend to Tk5,000, or with both.

In Jessore too, a branch of Manirampur Sonali Bank Limited has been accused of hoisting the national flag on a broomstick.

On the morning of December 16, a picture related to this went viral on social media.

Upon receiving the information, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syed Zakir Hasan, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Palash Debnath, Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam, OC (Investigation) Sikder Motiar Rahman, and others visited the spot.

However, the bank officials claim that the stand is not a broom rather a GI pipe used for self-protection. Ansar member of the bank Jahangir Alam mistakenly hoisted the flag on the GI pipe instead of the flag stand.

Ansar member of the bank Jahangir Alam said it was his misunderstanding.

Sonali Bank Limited’s Manirampur Branch Manager Farukuzzaman said: “The flag hoisting stand was not a broom. We set up a white stand to hoist the flag. Ansar member Jahangir was also instructed to hoist the flag from that stand. However, he mistakenly hoisted the flag on a coloured GI pipe.”

Manirampur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Syed Zakir Hasan said: “I went to the spot after receiving the news. I made them change the stand.

“The way they hoisted the flag was not right. I have talked to the general manager of the bank. I have asked him to take action against the Manirampur branch manager immediately.”
