A court in Sylhet has placed Sheikh Saidur, who accused Rayhan of robbing him, on three-day remand in a separate fraud case.
Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court’s Judge Saifur Rahman granted the three-day remand after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) prayed for a five-day remand on Sunday afternoon, Superintendent of PBI (Sylhet range) Khaled Uj Jaman said.
Earlier, Sheikh Saidur Rahman was brought before the court in the case filed against him on charges of fraud on November 2.
Saidur had complained to police that Rayhan, who was allegedly beaten to death on the night of October 11 in police custody at the Bandar Bazar police outpost, had stolen his belongings.
Saidur was shown as arrested by PBI on October 25 for his involvement in Rayhan’s custodial death case.
The accused policemen in the Rayhan killing case claim that Saidur came to them and complained that Rayhan stole from him. Acting on his remarks, police detained Rayhan.
Rayhan died in police custody after being tortured on October 11, his family alleges. Police have denied the allegation and said Rayhan was caught and lynched by locals when he was caught in the act of a mugging.
Police said they found Rayhan wounded and took him to a hospital, where he died.
However, the victim's mother said Rayhan had called her from an unknown number at 4:23am and told her that police had taken him to Bandar Bazar police outpost and were demanding Tk10,000 for his release.
At midnight on October 12, Rayhan’s wife Tahmina Akhter Tanni filed a case over his death with Kotwali police station, with no named accused. The case was later transferred to the PBI due to demands from the family, police said.
